Here, residents from six cities around the world share pictures of their neighbourhoods with local organisations and urban planners, actively contributing to the transformation of their urban landscapes. Take part in the project and become a community scientist!

El Poble-sec, Barcelona

Poble-sec is a Barcelona district situated between the Montjuic Olympic park and the historical city centre. Just 50 years ago the neighbourhood hosted informal housing mixed with industries, now Poble-sec has transitioned into a residential area and embodies a diverse community with a rich tapestry of cultures and livelihoods. Despite ongoing forces of gentrification, a spirit of local identity persists, fostering grassroots networks and numerous NGOs.

Rumkale, Maharagama, Colombo District

Rukmale is a neighbourhood situated in Maharagama, Colombo District, in the Western Province, of Sri Lanka. It is administered by the Maharagama Urban Council. Surrounded by towns including Kottawa, Aturugiriya, Homagama, and Makumbura. This area was largely developed as a residential township after the establishment
of the Rukmalgama Housing Scheme in this area in 1981, which comprised 501 houses, and was the very first large-scale housing establishment in Sri Lanka. The neighbourhood consists of middle-high-income people representing ethnicities, predominantly Sinhalese, with Tamils and Muslims as minorities. Rukmale neighbourhood is located 20 km away from Colombo's central business district, which has the potential to attract a residential population.

To thank you for participating in our project, we will provide you with an amount of Rs.7500 which will be offered as Rs. 3500 in stage one and Rs. 4000 in stage two of the project.

Initial workshop and facilitation

This will be an initial meeting with the selected participants of the project, to introduce the project and a workshop to familiarise them with the photovoice method.

Budiriro, Harare

Budiriro district is a high density suburb covering an area of 3.8 km2. It falls under the municipality of Harare, Zimbabwe. It is a predominantly Christian neighborhood, with a few Muslims mainly
of foreign origin. Although the Shona are the largest ethnic group, Ndebele and foreign languages are spoken by the minority. The local economy is dominated by the informal sector, which represents
60% of total employment. The district is characterized by periodic prevalence of diseases such as cholera and typhoid, and has been one of the worst affected areas by COVID-19 in the City of Harare.

Local collaborators

City of Harare is the official governing body for the capital city of Zimbabwe, Harare. The city is the country’s economic hub, located in Harare Metropolitan which is situated in the north-eastern part of the country. Harare City Council’s mission is to provide first class service delivery as it aims to achieve its vision of a world class city status by 2025. The council is responsible for providing clean drinking water, housing, refuse collection facilities and health services. It executes its mandate sometimes in partnership with non-governmental organisations and community based groups. 

Compensation

To thank you for participating in our project, we will provide you with a gift of US$25, that is, US$10 for first stage and US$15 for the second stage.

The Quays, Ordsall, Pendleton and Charlestown, Salford

The southernmost part of Salford's inner city, comprising The Quays, Ordsall, Pendleton, and Charlestown areas, is bordered by the Manchester Ship Canal on two sides. It encompasses Salford Quays, boasting high-quality housing and leisure developments, while Ordsall sees significant social housing. The region has experienced a surge in both construction and population, driven by the development of numerous apartments and flats, establishing Ordsall, Pendleton, Charlestown, and The Quays as an increasingly desirable location for residence and investment. However, the communities living in this neighbourhood face challenges including housing affordability, social housing needs, community development, infrastructure, social inclusion, environmental sustainability, and heritage preservation.

Salford City Council, as the local authority of the City of Salford in Greater Manchester, plays a pivotal role in enhancing the lives of its residents. With a mission statement focused on creating the best possible quality of life for the people of Salford, the council provides a complete and comprehensive range of services and facilities to meet the diverse needs of the community. As a metropolitan borough council and a constituent council of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, Salford City Council is dedicated to delivering essential local government services and fostering positive change within the region. Longueuil

Longueuil is a city with 261,516 inhabitants located on the south shore of Montreal. The targeted area within the Ensemble project is in Vieux-Longueuil, the historic heart of the city. This is a densely populated area that includes residential zones, commercial arteries, a university, and a metro station used by many South Shore residents. For several years, the neighborhood has been facing challenges related to an aging population, increasing poverty, housing access, and social cohesion. It is an area characterized by strong mobilization of community actors working to improve living conditions.

Bangpooré, Ouagadougou

The city of Ouagadougou has 12 districts, 55 sectors, and neighborhoods. The Bangpooré neighborhood straddles two peripheral sectors (38 and 39) of district 9. Sector 38, with an estimated population of 88,174 inhabitants, covers an area of 4,130.98 km2 with a density of 21.3. A portion of sector 38 consists of spontaneous housing commonly referred to as "non-planned." Sector 39, with 13,126 inhabitants, covers an area of 609.503 km2 with a density of 21.5. Bangpooré is thus a peripheral sector and often experiences difficulties in accessing clean water and electricity services. The primary economic activity is dominated by the informal sector. Like all neighborhoods of Ouagadougou, Bangpooré is ethnically and religiously diverse.

District 9 is located in the peripheral area, covering an area of 37.374 km². This district consists of urban sectors 37, 38, 39, and 40. It includes the following main neighborhoods: Bangpooré, Larlé Wéogho, Marcoussis, Silmiyiri, Wob Riguéré, and Ouapassi. The total population of the district is estimated at 336,483 people, including 167,044 men and 169,439 women according to the 2019 General Population and Housing Census (RGPH). The district is governed by a mayor, assisted by two deputies, all elected for a five-year term. The municipal council is the deliberative body of the commune. The development vision of the district is to have "modern infrastructure with strengthened governance in an improved living environment by the year 2027.
